Set over 600 acres of land, ZSL Whipsnade is the UK's largest zoo. Located in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, it's home to more than 3,600 animals.
Since the zoo first opened in 1931, it has evolved to become one of the UK's most thrilling attractions for animal lovers of all ages. Whipsnade has lots of educational exhibits, and offers many unique animal experiences and encounters, which is why it's such a popular destination for family days out.
Among the animals you can expect to spot during a day out at Whipsnade are African lions, white rhinos, Amur tigers, hippos and red pandas. You can also get a spectacular view of the zoo's giraffes from the 9ft high viewing barn.
One of the latest additions to the Whipsnade family is a pack of African hunting dogs, which have been transferred to the zoo as part of its ongoing conservation work.
Unlike other UK zoos, Whipsnade is more like a safari park, as some enclosures can only be fully appreciated by driving through them, or by taking a trip on the Jumbo Express steam train. This map of the zoo can help you plan your route.
Families with younger children will enjoy a trip to the Butterfly Farm, or they can get up close with a variety of different free-roaming creatures - including llamas, alpacas, goats, chickens and turkeys - at the Children's Farm petting zoo.
