Located on the border of Warwickshire and Leicestershire, the popular Twycross Zoo has been a hit for family days out since it was founded in 1963. This award-winning conservation charity is also a World Primate Centre, looking after every type of great ape including the only group of bonobos in the UK. As well as being a specialist primate zoo, Twycross Zoo has a vast number of other species, such as giraffes, kangaroos, Amur leopards, Humboldt penguins, tapirs, snakes and ring-tailed lemurs to name just a few.
When planning your day out at the zoo, it’s helpful to check the zoo map to find the exhibits easily. There are over 500 animals belonging to 125 species so you don’t want to miss any while you’re there. You can also enjoy daily animal talks and visit Lorikeet Landing to feed the lorikeets. Stroke the animals in Explorer Zone, such as donkeys, goats, ferrets, rabbits, sheep, guinea pigs and alpacas. Walk along the scenic path in the huge tropical exhibit called Butterfly Forest. See the delighted looks on your kids’ faces as butterflies land on them while they walk around.
Why not make your day out even more special by booking one of the Animal Experiences? Be a keeper or junior keeper for the day, take part in a photography workshop or feed the animals — choose from your favourite among giraffes, otters, lemurs, penguins and meerkats.
Your kids can let off steam in the outdoor play areas dotted around the zoo or at the indoor soft-play jungle while you relax with a coffee. Enjoy a meal at one of the numerous cafés and restaurants. You’ll find kiosks, coffee houses and three restaurants in the zoo, serving a diverse range of food to suit everyone’s taste buds.
