Set in the grounds of Dudley Castle, Dudley Zoo offers a great day out for the whole family. Having opened in 1937, the zoo now houses about 200 species, comprising over 1,300 animals, many of which are endangered or rare popular exhibits and attractions, watch animal feedings, enjoy close-up animal encounters and even spend some time at the beach in this popular destination for fun days out. Plan your day out by following the park map.
Wander through Lemur Wood and laugh at the antics of the cheeky lemur residents. Gasp at the size of one of the UK’s biggest penguin colonies and see if you can spot Pingu, the oldest penguin living in Penguin Bay. Ever heard of a binturong? Well, now you can see two of them at the new Binturong Exhibit. See fast-moving marsupials as you roam through Wallaby Walkthrough and get close to lorikeets as they land on you and drink nectar from your hands at Lorikeet Lookout. With fewer than 500 Asiatic lions in the world, it’s a privilege to be able to see the two lionesses at Lion Ridge. Go to the castle’s courtyard to see birds of prey flying from the castle walls during the daily display. No self-respecting castle would be complete without bats so be sure to see the Castle Creatures exhibit for a truly medieval feel in this 11th-century castle.
As if that’s not enough to keep little ones entertained, they can let off steam in any of the three adventure playgrounds. They’ll squeal with delight at Farm and Barn where they can pet a range of farmyard and barn animals.
Grab some buckets and spades at ‘Ow Bin Yer’ Sands and enjoy a picnic at the zoo’s very own beach. If you prefer someone else to do the cooking for you, enjoy lunch at The Watering Hole, the Courtyard Café or at The Queen Mary Restaurant, which you’ll find opposite the sea lion pool.
