Located in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, and set across 70 acres of land, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is an incredible place to visit for a memorable family day out. It’s home to almost 400 animals, including the only polar bears in the UK, and 70 species.
Concerned with conserving endangered species, Yorkshire Wildlife Park mainly houses animals that are threatened or endangered. In Leopard Heights, you’ll find beautiful Amur leopards. The award-winning reserve is Europe’s biggest Amur leopard facility. Three Amur tigers live in the world-renowned Land of the Tiger, amid grasslands, waterfalls, woodlands and pools. As a result of the European Breeding Programme, three cubs were born and have now been rehomed to continue the breeding programme in other locations.
See a herd of distinct Bactrian camels, which are now critically endangered in the wild. Watch the painted dogs play in their various habitats and see the lion pride roam around their seven-acre reserve. See the two female Giant Otters munching on trout or playing in the water, and gasp at the lemurs leaping among the trees in the walk-through Lemur Woods. The immersive, landscaped reserve Into Africa is home to ostriches, giraffes, black rhinos, elands, Grevy’s zebras and lechwes.
Mimicking their natural West African habitat, the Guinea baboon reserve is a wonderful place to observe these curious and intelligent baboons. Walk amongst wallabies in Wallaby Walkabout and you can even touch them if they come close enough to you. Get close to a diverse range of animals in South America Viva, including the mara, capybara, marmoset, squirrel monkey, giant anteater, armadillo, coati and agouti. Be amazed by the sight of the pair of okapi who will hopefully breed in the future.
Perhaps the most popular animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park are the polar bears. The innovative habitat, Project Polar, was the park’s flagship project and designed with welfare, conservation and education in mind.
For those who love creepy crawlies, the Big Bugs and Deadly Bugs enclosures are waiting to be braved.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park opens daily at 10am with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day when it will be closed. Please note that no pets are allowed in the park and, in some areas, prams or buggies will have to be left in the buggy park due to the free-roaming animals.
