KMTC was founded in 1943 under the name of Knutsford Amateur Operatics Society (KAOS). Since then, they have put on a variety of different shows from their very first, The Mikado, to their more recent family favourite, Oliver!.

The decision was made in 2011 to change the name to the now known Knutsford Musical Theatre Company, to reflect the style of the company. They also moved rehearsal venue to Shawheath Social Club, on the outskirts of the town.
