The York Dungeon is an interactive entertainment experience that combines thrills with chills. Offering a 70 minute journey through York’s history, the attraction uses live actors, special effects and storytelling to recreate gruesome scenes and notorious characters from York’s past, such as Dick Turpin and Guy Fawkes. The experience provides 12 live shows, each staged within a 360 degree set that allows the visitor to see, hear, touch and smell the experience. The Dungeon aims to thrill its visitors with realistic recreations of gruesome events, funny moments and scary surprises. Due to the dark and sinister nature of the tour, it is not suitable for young children or those with a sensitive nature.
Each live show reveals fascinating details about historical figures and gives a realistic experience of life from the past. You can experience life under the tyrannical reign of King Henry VIII in the Tyrannical Tudors, witness the effects of the plague in The Doctor’s Surgery, and learn about the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Journey through the Catacombs of York Minster in the Lost Roman Legion Labyrinth and meet Eric Bloodaxe, the last Viking King of York. You can also experience torture first hand in The Torturer’s chair, face The Judge for trial, before being executed for your crimes by the Halifax Gibbet. You will also come face to face with a real witch in the Market Square of York and hear the tale of the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin in the Castle Prison.
The York Dungeon is located opposite the Grand Opera House on Clifford Street in York. If you are arriving by car, there is a car park located in St George’s Field Car Park near the Dungeon. There is a bus stop just outside the Dungeon, but you can also arrive by train, as the Dungeon is only a five minute walk from York Railway Station.
