Learn the rich history steeped within the walls

Whether your family are natural history buffs or just looking to learn something new, Bamburgh Castle is the ideal location to learn the history of the local area and how it contributed to the country we know and love today. A fort was originally built on the site some time around the fifth and sixth centuries, being rebuilt by the Normans in the eleventh century. During that time, Bamburgh Castle's notable events include its place as the 'cradle of Christianity', being home to numerous kings, including Henry VI, and falling to gunpowder during the War of the Roses.

What other facilities are available?

Aside from the Tack Room Cafe, other facilities at Bamburgh Castle include the Clock Tower Tearoom and a gift shop. Bamburgh Castle also offers a selection of luxurious on-site accommodations, including Grove House, Kingfisher Cottage, and St. Aidan's Lodge.

What age groups is it suitable for?

Bamburgh Castle is a great day out for all the family. However, there is some walking and steep access (though very few steps) so do bear this in mind if you have reduced mobility. The use of pushchairs and prams is not permitted in the State Rooms of Bamburgh Castle, so it is advised that you use a baby carrier. There is also a baby changing unit provided on-site.

What indoor attractions does it have?

Throughout the year, Bamburgh Castle provides a range of both outdoor and indoor entertainment, including workshops, performances, and more. There are also all 14 State Rooms to explore, the armoury, two museums, victorian stables, and more.

What is the best time to visit and why?

If you would prefer a quieter time to explore the castle, opt for visiting in the morning. To enjoy seasonal events, visiting Bamburgh Castle in December is sure to delight.

What should you take with you and why?

When visiting Bamburgh Castle, there is not much you need to take with you except a curiosity for historical wonders! If you plan on enjoying the beautiful stretch of surrounding grounds, take weather-appropriate protection such as suncream, a raincoat or an umbrella. Aside from that, you can take snacks to enjoy, or money to buy something from the food sites and gift shop.

What else is there to do whilst in the area?

There is plenty more to do in the surrounding area of Bamburgh Castle. Bamburgh Beach is overlooked by the castle and is a short distance away; Budle Bay is also nearby.
